Charleston is making progress with its Capital Improvement Program. The project is slated for a 3 year timeframe and will include several upgrades to the sewer system. Plum Wastewater Treatment Plant is designing a new facility which will have pre-treatment, primary clarifiers and final settling tanks. Renovations to the gravity sewer trunk mains for the Highway 61 corridor and Johns Island are also part of the sewer overhaul. There is also an objective to replace a 110 year old settling basin at the Hanahan Water Treatment Plant. A settling basin is a concrete structure that uses sedimentation to remove settled matter and assess the water quality and haziness due to particles from wastewater. The basins are used to control water pollution in diverse industries such as agriculture and mining. The City of Charleston has also implemented a quality standardization that will serve to reduce overall cost of operations and maintenance, as well as, reduce the total inventory of spare or replacement components and ensure a familiarity with systems resulting in reduced down time during emergencies.
A useful tip: Don’t drain your cooking grease. Even when you use hot, soapy water, grease will cool and settle out of the water. Over time, this can clog your sewer line. Always dispose of grease safely in the trash can.
